They are still full of grasshoppers.The next two photos are a few weeks old, but nice camouflage shots.This guy blended in nicely with the blue-gray leaves.  He was close to being ready to make his final molt.  You can see his puffy wing pads. I was able to identify it as a species of Ceresa, a Buffalo treehopper.  Some other Ceresa species have not only a humped back, but buffalo-like "horns" as well. I got to the point that I felt it might happen at any time, and I began to leave the net butterfly cage open, so that if it did come out some time when I was not there, it could be free to fly away. The first time I saw one was when we first moved to Fullerton.  I thought it was some kind of slug.  In fact, I called it a "mystery slug".  It wasn't until years later that I found it online and learned it's a flatworm.  A land planarian, Bipalium kewense.  They live in dark, moist places in the garden, under rocks and such.  And they eat earthworms. type='text'>Small carpenter bee</title><summary type='text'>I didn't know it until I looked it up, but this is a carpenter bee.  It's tiny, not like those big black ones that usually come to mind when I think of carpenter bees. I didn't have my glasses, so I couldn't really see it very well.I had to rely on my camera to focus where my eyes could not.  Viewing the image on the screen of my camera, I was still mystified.   What's with those wings?  Surely it can't actually fly. You can see their crops were full.  The crop is like a pouch in the throat that the mama bird packs with food.  So it looks like they're being fed OK.  I found a website all about hummingbirds, and according to what I read, the mama bird still spends a lot of time sitting on the nest to keep these tiny, naked babies warm.
