I wonder why they don't just go all the way in there?

I saw this cute little pink inchworm in my neighbor's rose this morning. Look how he's all stretched out to the max, his head in the nutritious pollen, his tiny rear prolegs stretched out waaay behind him.

A different inchworm in a similar position, taken last week. And this one has some kind of other little bug that looks like it's checking out his toes, but he doesn't seem to notice.

So why to they do that? Is it more efficient that way? Are they poised for a speedy getaway? (not that inchworms are very fast anyway.) Or did I just coincidentally catch them in a similar pose?
