Just like snowflakes, only they eat your plants

I've been working in the yard a bit, and I'm coming across lots of snails. (Helix aspersa) I think I've noticed this before, but it seems like the patterns on their shells can have considerable variation between individuals. I wonder if they are each actually different and unique, like fingerprints, or like snowflakes?

I thought this one was especially nice.
