Bark beetle traps

I noticed a couple of these contraptions at the arboretum last week. Chris, the curator, told me that they are bark beetle traps. They're just checking to see if we have any here.

Lazy summer day

I am only just now recovering from my post-breakfast pancake "coma", and this hot weather isn't doing much to increase my energy level. To make matters worse, my computer has been very cranky lately. But I wanted to send a little summer cheer to blogger-friend Gilly, who is having winter where she lives in New Zealand.

And, since I am the Bug Lady, I'm saying it with a grasshopper!

Hope you're feeling better soon, Gilly!

Gathering place

Bunches of tiny bugs congregated to feed on the juices of the salvia flowers.

Katydid

I heard him calling, so I followed the sound until I found him.

Caterpillar identifier page

Blogger-friend Julie posted a picture of a caterpillar with an ID request. I'd never seen anything like it, but I knew where I wanted to start my search:

the Discover Life Caterpillar Search Page. It doesn't have a particulaly large data base, but you can check the box for your mystery caterpillar's features, like stripes, spots, hair density, etc. and it will put the information together and give you a picture and a name for whatever comes close. It was enough to identify Julie's caterpillar as the larva of the Echo Moth. Pretty, and of course, we don't have them here.
