In my yard today...

This was the first morning in a long time that we didn't have "June Gloom". It was sunny and bright. My yard is really pretty much of a mess, but there are already populations of bugs flourishing.

This little mantis is doing a good job of camouflaging himself like the dried flowers and leaves of this weed. I have decided to encourage a few big weeds to grow on the side of my yard, where there's nothing else growing anyway. There are also several grasshoppers there.

A katydid in the front yard. I've been seeing lots of katydids and grasshoppers.

This tiny grasshopper hatchling is bristling with little hairs. (The camera angle makes his eyes look crossed and cartoonish.)

Mourning Cloak caterpillar

Somehow, it seems like Mourning Cloak butterflies used to be a lot more common. I don't see that many anymore. I have a Chinese Elm tree in my back yard. Once, a long time ago, I saw caterpillars on it. Not since then. I was thrilled to find this guy on the trunk of a Chinese Elm in the arboretum parking lot.

Hey, sweetlips!

Spike ate a big, juicy berry yesterday. Now it looks like she's wearing lipstick.
